Abstract

The advancement in WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) has grown its attention due to its ability to observe and monitor physical and dynamic environmental conditions. WSN is more focused on sending subtle data with low energy consumption throughout the sensing and computation process and transporting it to the target location. One of the major issues in WSN is that sensor devices can operate only on restricted power sources. These nodes are not easily available in various applications like battlefields, dense forests etc. due to the hostile environment and so they cannot be recharged. Due to energy loss the network performances get affected. There have been many techniques developed to ameliorate the energy depletion problem. In this paper we address common problems and comprehensive literature review of techniques which involve cluster-based routing for Heterogeneous WSN. Classification of several WSN routing protocols powered by efficient energy utilization, benefits and shortcomings of each proposed algorithm is discussed. This paper also gives vision to many users as we also provide a broad categorization of several heterogeneous routing protocols based on certain factors like energy utilization, choice of Cluster Head, mobility of node, node hierarchy and specific applications.
