SAICSIT 2022:Editor's Preface

This proceedings volume contains the proceedings of the 43rd South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists Conference - SAICSIT‘22 with the theme Reality of the Connected Future held 18-20 July 2022, Cape Town, South Africa.

Dear authors and readers,

It is with great pleasure that I write this foreword to the Proceedings of the 43rd annual conference of the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT’22) in Cape Town, South Africa, from 18 to 20 July 2022. We are extremely glad that we are again able to host a face-to-face conference where we can meet, share and collaborate in person in beautiful Cape Town. The programme includes a tutorial and workshop day on 18 July, where we again have the opportunity to participate in the annual AISSAC workshop as well as an article writing workshop. The main SAICSIT conference is from 19 to 20 July 2022 and it presents scholars with a forum for presenting research in computer science, information systems, information technology, software engineering and computer engineering (as defined in the ACM, AIS and IEEE-CS).

The annual SAICSIT conference supports the objectives of SAICSIT, which include to enhance the communication amongst members and all interested parties regarding research and development projects by means of services and links with other professional bodies; to support education and training, and to seek solutions to technical and socio-economic problems in South Africa by means of research and development projects. Therefore, the theme for SAICSIT 2022 is the Reality of the Connected Future. Our connected future has the potential to transform our world for the better as connected computing technologies are applied in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, the environment and ecosystems, energy, law enforcement, education, and city and infrastructure planning.  The choice of conference theme was intended to ensure research contributions from the two main computing disciplines, namely Computer Science (CS) and Information Systems (IS), and these two disciplines were handled as separate tracks at SAICSIT 2022 with different reviewers. Accepted submissions are also presented in different streams. Invited keynote address were presented by experts in the field: Irwin Brown on “A Critical Reflection on Information Systems Research in an African Context”, Louise Leenen on “The neglected art of problem formulation and modelling” and Bruce Watson on “Advances in AI for Cybersecurity”.

We also decided to, true to the beliefs of SAICSIT, establish an open-access proceedings volume and henceforth we hope to publish all our proceedings in the EPiC Computing series, which is open-access. We are also establishing a pipeline to publish the most promising research from our SAICSIT conference in SACJ, the South African Computing Journal in collaboration with the SACJ editor, Katherine Malan.

Technical Information

For SAICSIT 2022 we solicited papers documenting original research in the computing disciplines, and we used the EasyChair system for submission and review. We received 27 papers in the Computer Science (CS) track and 22 papers in the Information Systems (IS) track, which were sent to our programme committee for review. The programme committee comprised of more than 25 IS and CS members respectively from more than twenty different institutions nationally and internationally. Each paper was reviewed by at least three members of the programme committee in a rigorous, double-blind process whereby especially the following criteria were taken into consideration: Relevance to SAICSIT, Significance, Technical Quality, Scholarship, and Presentation that included quality and clarity of writing. For this SAICSIT proceedings volume, 11 full research papers were selected for publication in the CS track (which translates to an acceptance rate of 40,7%) and 8 full research papers were selected for publication in the IS track (which translates to an acceptance rate of 36%). The accepted papers document original research within the Computer Science and Information Systems disciplines, and are from authors affiliated with a wide range of institutions nationally.

We are all grateful for the hard work of the SAICSIT 2022 organizing committee: Judith Bishop (general chair), Philip Machanick and Hein Venter (Computer Science co-chairs), as well as Marie Hattingh and Tendani Mawela (Information Systems co-chairs).

Thank you to all the authors and programme committee members, and congratulations to the authors whose work was accepted for publication in this proceedings volume. We wish our readers a pleasant reading experience.
