Studying Students' Ability to Recognize Hazard Symbols of Some Chemicals

EasyChair Preprint no. 9647

Abstract

In this paper, we have examined the hazard symbols (GHS) on chemical labels used in the CHEM205 general chemistry lab in the Fall 2022-2023 academic year to determine whether students are familiar with chemical label reading and safety when working with chemicals. The purpose of this study is to make a self-assessment. The survey was conducted by questionnaire survey method, and in the 2022-2023 academic year, 131 students from 19 programs participated in the survey out of 170 students from 22 programs studying the CHEM205 general chemistry course of the general foundation of natural sciences of MU, SUS, and BSU. According to the results of the study, the ability of all students to recognize and name chemical hazard symbols (GHS) was weak. No significant difference was found in the ability to recognize the level of danger of chemical substances among all the students involved in the study, depending on their level of study and gender. The most commonly used sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid warning signs are not recognized. From the results of the research, it was revealed that students have weak ability to recognize the warning signs of chemicals, they misunderstand them, and they do not pay attention to the labels of chemicals during experiments. In the future, it is considered necessary for all students to pay attention to the warning signs of chemical substances.
