Abstract

Due to the increasing concerns of global warming and fast climate change, access to renewable energies and increasing energy efficiency to reduce the consequences of CO2 emissions have become crucial to sustainable development. Biomass-based energy is being considered the main source of renewable energy. Biomass gasification is one of the most promising methods to produce biomass-based energy carriers. Gasification is a thermochemical process to convert solid carbon-based feedstock into combustible gases, often referred to as syngas, which can be used in different applications such as heating, power generation, production of combustible fuel, or valuable chemicals. By applying Aspen plus, a comprehensive process model is developed for biomass gasification in a fluidized bed gasifier. The purpose is to model both hydrodynamic parameters and reaction kinetic modeling. The prediction of such a model includes the main gaseous species, carbon conversion, the water-gas shift (WGS), and the methanation reaction. The sensitivity analysis has been performed to investigate the effects of the temperature and equivalence ratio on the gasification process. The validation of the result has been carried out. The results show that by increasing the temperature, the production of hydrogen and carbon conversion is boosted.
