A Survey Paper on DNA-Based Data Storage

Abstract

On average, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated on the internet every day. So, the demand for data storage is growing exponentially, but the capacity of existing storage media is not keeping up. A revolution in the field of data storage is the need of an hour. This paper surveys a very unique technique of storing digital data in DNA sequences. The idea is to replicate nature’s way of storing information. It has been around with us for ages. This paper elaborates on the procedure, applications, and challenges that are associated with this fictitious idea of data storage. Using DNA to archive data is an attractive possibility because it is extremely dense, with a raw limit of 1 Exabyte/mm3 (109 GB/mm3), and long-lasting, with an observed half-life of over 500 years.
