Improving Accuracy of Ideal-Element Propagation by Manifold Correction

Abstract

An algorithm is proposed for improving performance of numerical integration based on Hansen’s ideal frame when applied to conservative perturbed Keplerian motion. The procedure relies on the techniques of manifold projection methods, and is computationally inexpensive. The benefits of this approach are illustrated with the main problem of artificial satellite theory, whose variation equations are formulated explicitly in the ideal frame to avoid rotations.
