Microfluidic Synthesis of Nanoparticles: Precision Engineering for Drug Delivery Systems

Abstract

The development of nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems has gained significant attention due to their potential to revolutionize targeted therapies. Microfluidics has emerged as a powerful tool for precisely engineering nanoparticles with controlled size, shape, and surface properties, essential for optimizing drug delivery efficiency. This review focuses on the microfluidic synthesis of nanoparticles for drug delivery applications, highlighting the fundamental principles, fabrication techniques, and recent advancements. The utilization of microfluidic platforms allows for superior control over reaction parameters, enabling the synthesis of nanoparticles with remarkable uniformity and reproducibility. Various microfluidic strategies, including continuous-flow and droplet-based systems, offer versatile methods for producing nanoparticles of diverse compositions, ranging from polymeric, and lipid-based, to metallic and hybrid materials. Moreover, the influence of microfluidic parameters, such as flow rates, mixing configurations, and reaction kinetics, on nanoparticle characteristics is discussed in detail. Furthermore, the tailored design afforded by microfluidic platforms facilitates the functionalization of nanoparticles by targeting ligands, imaging agents, and stimuli-responsive moieties, enhancing their specificity and therapeutic efficacy. The review also examines the potential challenges and future perspectives in scaling up microfluidic nanoparticle synthesis for industrial translation, emphasizing the need for standardized protocols and robust manufacturing techniques.
