Abstract

The manifestation of skills inherent in critical thinking in the Colombian school context is scarce. Such is the case of secondary school students of an institution in Medellín, who, from their words and actions, demonstrate low levels of critical thinking, reflected in relationships with others and with the world that happens to them. The school journalism in which the Information and Communication Technologies were used was designed and implemented and the critical thinking of the students was measured, before and after its implementation as a didactic strategy, through a quasi-experimental design pretest posttest and control group. The assignment to the experimental group was done randomly. The didactic strategy was intended to consolidate spaces for the problematization of realities, from journalistic writing at school with the use of ICT; It was based on the premise that these technologies facilitate the tasks of journalism, since the work of writing and rewriting and also consulting reliable sources, a basic element of critical thinking, is more viable when using technology. Specifically, the use of digital databases and computer programs for the edition and layout of the newspaper was encouraged. Similarly, interaction between students was encouraged with social networks. An instrument was created to measure critical thinking and its validity and reliability were verified. For 22 sessions in three months, the experimental group, in teams of five members, built school newspapers collaboratively, while the control group did not carry out any additional activities to the classes. It was found that the use of technology in the preparation of school newspapers significantly increased critical thinking scores in the post-test, while the control group had no significant changes.
