Abstract

Optical fiber is a transmission line or a type of cable made of very glass or plastic finer and smaller than a strand of hair, and can be used to transmit light signals carry information from one place to another. In this research, a fiber sensor is made SMS structured optics (singlemode–multimode–singlemode) and connected to OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) which can be used to detect light interference patterns on multimode graded index optical fiber by observing changes in power loss on the current OTDR strain testing was carried out on the SMS structured fiber optic sensor. Characteristics of any SMS structured fiber optic sensor that has been fabricated uses multimode optical fiber with lengths of 5.5 cm, 6 cm, 6.5 cm and 7 cm and with the use of the operating wavelength, namely 1310nm. Strain testing is carried out by providing a shift from 0 - 1000 µm on the optical fiber SMS structured with increasing variations every 100 µm. Based on the research results, it was found that The multimode length of 5.5 cm and 6 cm occurs as an increase in the graph. The more the strain increases, the loss the generated power is greater. While the multimode length of 6.5 cm and 7 cm shows that there is a downward trend. The difference in graphics like this is due to the re-imaging point on multimode length 6.89 cm. Where at this point occurs minimum interference to the amount mode that is passed on the multimode optical fiber, so that it can cause a decrease in fiber optic loss. Meanwhile, the length of multimode optical fiber is 5.5 cm to 7 cm higher linearity and power loss. This is due to the intensity in the area range still high. In addition, the length of 5.5 cm to 7 cm multimode optical fiber can also be used used as a strain sensor because it has a high linearity.
