Mitigation of the DC Component: an Approach to Improve the Performance of Distance Protection Zones

Abstract

With the diversification of the energy matrix, electrical power systems have become increasingly complex. Regarding the electrical power system protection, its operation must be kept secure and selective under this new scenario. Protection phasor estimation might be degraded by voltage and current distortions, such as harmonics and DC components. In the case of distance protection, these errors can result in over or underreach, which is further aggravated near the protection zone boundaries. This study proposes an approach to minimize phasor estimation errors in order to improve distance protection performance. The proposed approach utilizes a filter to mitigate the DC component in the voltage and current signals of the relay. The methodology was evaluated on protecting a transmission line in over 4000 fault cases, comparing it to the conventional approach without the DC component filter. In the tests, the proposed approach proved to be effective in reducing the protection clearing time and mitigating the oscillations on the estimated distance, thus, increasing protection reliability.
