We are pleased to announce the first edition of the Workshop on Interactive Task Learning in Human-Robot Co-Construction (ITL4HRI), to be held at the International Con- ference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN) 2025. The workshop is dedicated to the development of frameworks that enable robots to learn tasks through phys- ical and social interactions with humans in co-construction settings.
In the near future, robots are expected to perform diverse tasks with human-level skillsets—such as manipulation and delivery—in various environments. However, despite their physical capabilities, programming robots to learn and execute such complex and context-sensitive tasks remains a major challenge. An appealing approach to overcome this involves design- ing frameworks for co-constructive task learning, where humans and robots co-create task understanding through ongoing interaction. This enables robots to learn with humans, not just from them.
As attention shifts toward large language models, we aim to discuss the benefits and limita- tions of existing approaches, with a focus on developing robots that can learn from humans and support them in daily activities. We seek to explore strategies to achieve this goal.
The workshop will advance the field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) by addressing crit- ical challenges in co-constructive task learning, drawing on insights from cognitive science, multimodal communication, effective social feedback mechanisms, and embodied task un- derstanding.
A keynote address by a leading expert in human-robot learning will enhance the workshop by offering cutting-edge insights and inspiration in the field of human-robot co-construction.
To encourage thoughtful reflection on the presented papers, we are shortening presenta- tion talks to 15 minutes, allowing more time for open discussion. After the talks, a grouping session will be held to encourage researchers from diverse backgrounds to contextualize the presented findings within the broader field and to build a shared understanding of co- constructive interactive learning. Additionally, we will host a demo session to practically showcase applications of co-constructive task understanding.
