SOUPS 2023: Workshop on Kids' Online Privacy and Safety (KOPS 2023)
The urgency of research exploring the exposure of minors to online harms is matched only by the challenges of researching and mitigating these. Following COVID, NCMEC reported an increase in child sexual abuse (CSA) approaches by more than 30%. In response to this growing issue, large tech companies have developed mechanisms for monitoring minors in order to improve their safety. However, this may have considerable consequences with respect to both data privacy as well as safety. Interdisciplinary research, including computationally and socially-based research in both academia and industry, is necessary to tackle and provide awareness to this growingly complex research area.
Call For Papers
The second workshop on Kids' Online Privacy and Safety (KOPS) is soliciting extended abstracts in privacy and online safety where the focus is on minors. Through KOPS, we aim to grow an interdisciplinary community focused on research related to the online privacy or safety of minors. Submissions may include papers describing novel research in this area as well as case studies, work in progress, preliminary results, novel ideas, and position papers. Papers on both the technical and human perspective are encouraged.
Accepted abstracts will be invited for a 15-minute talk at the workshop, with an additional 5 minutes for questions and discussion. Following the workshop, abstracts will be posted publicly. We are interested in talks from researchers, industry practitioners, lawyers, and safety advocates to discuss these issues. Example topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Resilience factors associated with minors' crime and safety
- Challenges in minors' online safety
- Methodology and lessons learned from designing studies in the minors' safety and privacy domain.
Submission Guidelines
This workshop welcomes papers describing novel research in this area as well as case studies, work in progress, preliminary results, novel ideas, and position papers. Papers should be at most six pages (excluding references) using the SOUPS template format.
Submission Deadline: May 25, 2023
Decision Notification: June 8, 2023
Best Paper Award
KOPS 2023 will offer a best paper award of $250, sponsored by Purdue University. The award will be conferred to the author(s) of awarded papers who will be present at the conference. The decision criterion will consider both the paper quality and the oral presentation quality.
