Up-to-date and reliable geoinformation is of paramount importance for sustainable development, taking into account the challenges posed by climate change, which societies in many countries are facing in different ways. Developments in recent years show that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent worldwide and that different regions of the world are affected differently in terms of both the type and severity of the events. The African continent suffers particularly badly from long periods of drought, which result in extreme humanitarian crises due to crop failures. On the other hand, heavy rainfall in Kenya in April 2024 lead to flooding that affected half of the country's surface area.
Even if developing countries are much more dramatically affected by the effects of climate change, industrialized societies also face the challenge of preparing for future extreme weather events.
The objective of the AGSE conference is therefore initially to raise participants' awareness of a global problem and to demonstrate approaches how geoinformation can contribute to responding to the most pressing problems and challenges in different regions of the world and how geodata can support the selection and implementation of preventive measures against the effects of climate change. To this end, the topics "VGI and Collaborative Cloud Mapping", multiscale data acquisition via satellite, airborne and UAV-based remote sensing sensors will be dealt with in theory, application areas and practical exercises in the form of theme days:
- Theme Day “Geoinformation Worldwide - Capture, Standards, Sources”
- Theme Day “Climate Change Monitoring through Remote Sensing Imagery and Processing”
- Theme Day “Geoinformation and Artificial Intelligence - current Trends and Applications”
- Theme Day “Data sharing and Collaborative Geoinformation Portals”
The event will be complemented by a cultural evening and an excursion.
The on-site training sessions are designed to (a) ensure the results provide direct tangible value for the region and (b) deepen the participants' understanding of local needs while joint project ideas are implemented.
Contributions on the key topics of the conference that correspond to the theme days mentioned above, or on topics related to them, are welcome.
