Language is a socio-cultural tool that serves amongst others to encapsulate the inter-subjective conceptualizations of people. As conceptualizations are inherently embedded in cultural practices, the relationship between language and culture can be multi-stratal. One of the areas where the relationship between language and culture is most visible is in literary productions. A recognition of these intricate relations is key to understanding our collective humanness.
Recognizing these relations is however not an end in itself; the practical implications and applications are far-reaching. Amongst these is an understanding of a people’s past, present and future; especially as language, a carrier of culture, in its literary manifestations, offers insights into different worldviews. Thus, one way to understand a people, is to investigate their language, culture, or literary productions. Such an epistemology has however not always benefited from falsifiable objectivity in its application to different languages, cultures, and literary works. Consequently, different biases can be observed in various theorisations in the humanistic sciences.
Recent happenings in the world have come to question such received knowledge, calling for their interrogation. These have brought into sharp focus the need for an auto-evaluation on the part of scholars working especially in language, literature, and culture, in order to produce knowledge that repositions the past while shaping the future. It is in this light that the Federation Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes (FILLM), in collaboration with the School of Languages, University of Ghana, invites proposals for individual papers and roundtable panels for its 29th congress, which is themed Languages, Literatures, and Cultures: Repositioning the Past, Innovating the Present, and which is to be held from 24th to 28th October 2023 at University of Ghana, Legon.
